The compute power required for AI systems is high, and that’s driving explosive demands for energy. The World Economic Forum noted as much in a 2024 report, where it specifically called out generative AI systems for their use of “around 33 times more energy to complete a task than task-specific software would.” Coders can use GenAI to handle much of the work and then use their skills to fine-tune and refine the finished product — a partnership that not only saves time but also allows coders to focus on where they add the most value. He said research has found, for example, that students sometimes are more comfortable asking chatbots questions about lessons rather than humans.
Biased and discriminatory algorithms
“The students are worried that they might be judged or be thought of as stupid by asking certain questions. But with AI, there is absolutely no judgment, so people are often actually more comfortable interacting with it.” AI’s ability to improve safety is evident in motor vehicle features that warn drivers when their attention wanes or they drift out of their travel lane. AI’s safety-enhancing capabilities are also seen in manufacturing, where it is deployed to automatically stop machinery about federal income taxes withheld on wages when it detects workers getting too close to restricted areas. It’s also on display when AI-powered robots are used to handle dangerous tasks, such as defusing bombs or accessing unstable buildings, instead of humans. AI has the potential to be dangerous, but these dangers may be mitigated by implementing legal regulations and by guiding AI development with human-centered thinking.
As AI has boomed in recent years, it’s become commonplace in both business and everyday life. People use AI every day to make their lives easier – interacting with AI-powered virtual assistants or programs. Companies use AI to streamline their production processes, project gains and losses, and predict when maintenance will have to occur. As the use of AI increases, these kinds of problems are likely to become more widespread.

He cited the loss of navigational skills that came with widescale use of AI-enabled navigation systems as a case in point. That mastery of the basics then allows them to understand how those tasks fit into the bigger parts of the work they must accomplish to complete an objective. Companies have benefited from the high availability of such systems, but only if humans have been available to work with them. An overreliance on AI technology could result in the loss of human influence — and a lack in human functioning — in some parts of society. Job Displacement
He highlighted how generative AI (GenAI) tools, such as ChatGPT and AI-based software assistants such as Microsoft’s Copilot, can shave significant time off everyday tasks. The technology can be trained to recognize normal and/or expected machine operations and human behavior. It can detect and flag operations and behaviors that fall outside desired parameters and indicate risk or danger.
The good news, Littman says, is that the field is taking these dangers seriously and actively seeking input from experts in psychology, public policy and other fields to explore ways of mitigating them. The makeup of the panel that produced the report reflects the widening difference between shareholder and stockholder perspective coming to the field, Littman says. Elsewhere, AI systems are diagnosing cancers and other conditions with accuracy that rivals trained pathologists.
In addition to data and algorithmic bias (the latter of which can “amplify” the former), AI is developed by humans — and humans are inherently biased. A 2024 AvePoint survey found that the top concern among companies is data privacy and security. And businesses may have good reason to be hesitant, considering the large amounts of data concentrated in AI tools and the lack of regulation regarding this information. Online media and news have become even murkier in light of AI-generated images and videos, AI voice changers as well as deepfakes infiltrating political and social spheres. These technologies make it easy to create realistic photos, videos, audio clips or replace the image of one figure with another in an existing picture or video. As a result, bad actors have another avenue for sharing misinformation and war propaganda, creating a nightmare scenario where it can be nearly impossible to distinguish between credible and faulty news.
